Spring Essentials

The Gentle-Woman

Spring is upon us! Without a doubt, most people will conjure up images of florals but taking a cue from Céline’s Spring/Summer Collection 2011, ‘contemporary minimalism’ is here to stay, with a dash of occasional bold color.

Phoebe Philo has probably singlehandedly transformed the look of Céline with her iconic chic utilitarianism style and simple silhouettes in the form of  wide-leg pants and crisp menswear shirts. As a true ‘Philo-phile’, I am trying to create her looks here with a mix of high street (top from Topshop, belt from H&M) and designer (eye-popping Jil Sander pants, Brian Atwood heels, Tom Ford glasses, Hermes bangle and watch). The  Marc Jacobs XL Single with its muted camel shade draws understated, yet refined chic. Anything from the monochromatic palette of nude/tan is bang-on trend as we all know by now, the camel color is  one of the biggest color trends to emerge and should definitely be a staple color in the wardrobe, regardless of the season.

What comes to mind when you think of ‘Marc Jacobs’ ? Definitely quirky, mischievous, whimsical. Score on the cuteness factor with bright cheeky colors and the quintessential Wayfarers that shouts instant cool (take a break from the usual black ones, have a hit at the Pink ones!) And what’s spring without rompers and wedges (Lanvin is doing a fantastic job at platforms/wedges this season)? Complete the  swingy silhouette with the usual cadre of covetable accessories (that includes the Marc Jacobs XL Single, which pays testament to the fact that the bag can be worked classic chic AND casual. So is that bang for the buck or what?

Lace Grace

As seen on the runways of the Spring/Summer 2011 collections from the delicate romantic looks of Oscar de la Renta to the bold coloured ones at Zac Posen, lace is going to be the material of the season. Contrary to popular belief that lace is hard to wear, the lace showing this season proves that several versatile looks can be pulled off, from sophisticated to sexy. . Wearing a soft fabric like lace with a worn material like leather (such as the Marc Jacobs XL Single) as shown here makes for a casual spring style, though accessories should be kept to a minimum as lace is already a very detailed material. Lace need not necessarily be white. As inspired by recent movies like Black Swan, black lace can be very intriguing as well. The vintage-inspired black lace dress by Marc Jacobs is definitely a head turner. Pair it with classic jewellery like pearls and tan accessories that would include the Marc Jacobs XL Single, and you got a winner!
